The Tiroler Grauvieh is well adapted to its local environment and climate (consisting of mountains, semi-desert, and wetlands) and also assists in vegetation management on extremely steep mountain pastures.

The Tiroler Grauvieh coat is grey with a white muzzleband (known in German as rehmaul), black horn tips and hoofs; bulls have a white eel-stripe along the back.

Tiroler Grauvieh horns are shaped artificially into a lyre shape.
