The breed name ‘Thai’ is used as a generic name for all the indigenous cattle of Thailand; the only named breed is the White Lamphun (Charoensook et al., 2013). Although a cluster analysis of phenotypic characters supports this taxonomy, no genetic basis has been found.
Thai cattle are traditionally used for draught and generally kept in extensive grazing. In the dry season, they forage in the forests or eat rice straw.
In Thailand, water buffalo outnumber the Thai cattle population.
