The Tagil is a composite of Dutch Friesian, Kholmogory, Swiss Brown, Tyrolean and local cattle.

The Tagil can be either red pied or black pied — however, some are uniclored red or black.

The three Tagil strains are:
• Starotagil - influenced by the Swiss Brown and Tyrolean
• Tagil-Dutch - mainly black and white
• Tagil Standard - not influenced by the Dutch Friesian
