The sarlag is a domestic yak found in Mongolia.
Whereas wild yak bulls average 170–200 cm (5.5–6.5 ft) at the withers, domestic yaks in general are much smaller. Mongolian domestic yak bulls stand 115–125 cm (3.7–4.1 ft) at the withers; cows stand 97–125 cm (3.1–3.5 ft). Coats range from the dark brown found on wild yaks to all sorts of color variations.
Yaks are a true all-purpose animal; they are used for riding and as pack animals, as well as being bred for beef and milk. Although yak meat has been described as being overly dark and coarse, yaks are often raised primarily for beef in Mongolia.
