Suksun
(transboundary/brand name)
(most common name):
• Suksunskaya skot
(local/other name):
• Suksunskaya
• Суксун скоты
The Suksun was developed as a dairy breed in central Urals by crossing local cattle with the Danish Red during the last half of the 1800s.
Further admixtures include:
• Angeln
• Danish Red (additional)
• Estonian Red
• Latvian Brown
• Red Steppe
Essentially, the Suksun can be regarded as a Ural subtype of the Danish Red.
The Suksun was an officially approved breed for the Chusovaya valley of the western Urals. This area adjoins what was the most heavily industrialized part of Russia in the 1700s and 1800s; it is also close to Yekaterinburg (formerly Sverdlovsk, and the fourth largest city in Russia).
Suksun numbers have declined since the 1960s and purebred animals can no longer be found.
