‘Slovakian-Carpathian Brown’ was a name given to distinguish the Carpathian Brown cattle developed in Slovakia in comparison to Ukrainian-Carpathian Brown cattle.

The Slovakian-Carpathian Brown developed in the western part of the Carpathian Mountains near the border of southeastern Poland and northern Slovakia. Here, two types of small, authentic Illyrian Shorthorn cattle were indigenous:
• Valachian Dwarf (Valassky)
• Bukowina Mountain

These local cattle were upgraded with imported sires, such as the Allgäuer, the Montafon, and the Swiss Brown. (The Montafon was a former Austrian Brown Mountain breed.)

The Slovakian-Carpathian Brown then developed into a very sturdy and environmentally well-adapted breed with a grey-brown coat and short upturned horns that bent gracefully backwards at the ends.

NOTE: As of 2018, Carpathian Brown cattle are no longer listed by Slovakia in the DAD-IS database.
