Seladang
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Bos gaurus hubbackii (Latin)
• Gaur
• Malayan Bison
• Malayan Gaur
The Seladang is still recognized by Malaysia as a variety of the Gaur.
Seladang bulls and cows are a dark brown — both have white to tan stockings. Their horns are curved and grow backwards from the poll and then upwards.
Seladang calves, born a yellowish-brown color, darken into adult coloration at the age of 3 months.
The Seladang is considered to be wildlife and are mostly kept in captivity where their lifespan ranges from 17–19 years. Their large size and beauty have made them a tourist attraction in Malaysia.
The Seladang belongs to the Bibovine cattle group. Bibovine refers to several species of large Southeast Asian wild cattle that are closely related to common cattle.
