The Rood type vlees is a double-muscled variety of the Belgian Red that is specifically bred for beef.
The Belgian Red is a dual-purpose dairy/beef breed that was originally bred to consistently have a red unicolored coat — however, red pied animals have also been allowed into the herdbook since 1977.
The Rood type vlees is known for its gentle nature and excellent quality meat. In 2019 ‘Vlees van het rood ras van West-Vlaanderen’ (meat of the red breed of West Flanders) was registered as a Protected Designation of Origin.
