The Romanian Steppe is a Podolian Grey Steppe cattle breed.
The Romanian Steppe formerly consisted of two types:
• Transylvanian (now absorbed into imported breeds)
• Moldavian (extinct)
The Moldavian had two varieties):
• Ialomitea (Jalomitz of Walachia; Ialomiţa and Ialomiteană in Romanian)
• Bucsan (Bucşan and Bucsanesu in Romanian)
Southwest Ukraine (formerly Podolia) is considered geographically to be one of the initial development areas for Grey Steppe cattle during the twelfth to fourteenth centuries.
Podolian cattle breeds have calves born with a fawn to reddish coat that turns grey or white after about five months of maturing.
As of 2021, the Romanian Steppe has a risk level of ‘unknown’ and no population count since 1994.
