Poll Hereford -heifer- Great Britain

Poll Hereford
(most common name)

(local/other name):
• British Polled Hereford
• Polled Hereford

The Poll Hereford in Great Britain originated from crossing Herefords with the Galloway.

In 1949, a Poll Hereford breed society was formed. Today, the entire Hereford population of Great Britain is mostly polled — due mainly to importation starting in the 1970s of Polled Herefords from the USA (which had larger and longer bodies).

An animal that is ‘naturally’ polled does not grow horns. This trait in cattle is something that is selected for by some breeders as it usually makes the cattle easier to manage and less likely to accidentally (or intentionally) harm each other.

You can also poll an animal with horns — meaning you cut the horns off.

The Hereford, originally a naturally horned breed, started in England.
