(local/other name):
• Mestizo Perijanero
• Mixed Perijanero
• Mosaico Perijanero
• Perija Mosaic
The Perijanero is found in the Serranía De Perijá (Mountains of Perijá) which are in western Venezuela and form part of the border between Colombia and Venezuela.
The Perijanero is now a crossbred population with zebu blood that was developed by unorganized crossbreeding of dairy and zebu types in the hopes of creating cattle well adapted to the rigors of tropical climates and to rustic management and feeding systems. Genotypically, the Perijanero is now 50% zebu with negligible Criollo blood remaining.
The original Perijanero Criollo, an indigenous breed developed through the crossbreeding of many different breeds that descended from the breeds introduced by the Spaniards, is extinct.
The Perijanero is used in low input double-purpose (milk-beef) production systems.
(Spanish) mestizo = mixed, crossbred
