Patagonian Criollo
(most common name in English)
local/other name:
• Criollo Argentino Patagonico
• Criollo argentino patagónico
• Criollo patagónico
Patagonian Criollo are from a closed population of Criollo cattle which has remained feral since the early twentieth century. They are located in the Austral Andes in the region of Los Glaciares National Park, which is in the southwest of the province of Santa Cruz, near the Chilean border.
Patagonian Criollo descend from the cattle left by local farmers after the area was declared a National Park in 1937. Some are purebred Argentine Criollo.
Argentine Patagonia has steppe-like plains, rising in a succession of abrupt terraces that are covered with an enormous bed of shingle and are almost bare of vegetation. Ponds or lakes of fresh and brackish water can be found in the hollows of the plains. Chilean Patagonia has more abundant animal life than the starker Argentine Patagonia and its vegetation is more lush.
