(transboundary/brand name)

(local/other name):
• Arab
• Gabaruyé
• Mauritanian
• Moor

• Zébu Maure (Mauritania/Senegal)

The Maure is a West African Shorthorned Zebu from the Sahel region of central and eastern Mauritania and also in central western Mali along the border of Mauritania.

Maure cattle are kept by transhumant Arab and Berber herders. In Mali, because of their seasonal shifting of locations to graze, initiatives to develop dairy enterprises using them have been problematic.

These cattle are associated with the Berbers in Mauritania known as the Maure people.

According to DAD-IS, the most recent population counts are:
2015 - 401,268 (Mali)
2020 - 1,920,000 (Mauritania; average herd size was 45)
