Maraîchine
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• La race Maraîchine
• Maraîchin (English)
• Marchaise
• Saintongeaise
• Vendée maraîchin
The Maraîchine is mostly found in Pays de la Loire (a region in western France with a coastline on the Bay of Biscay) and Poitou-Charentes (now part of the new region Nouvelle-Aquitaine).
The Maraîchine is a triple-purpose variety of the Parthenais that was known for its large size, capacity for draught, and milking performance. Until the mid-1800s these cattle were kept in a semi-feral state.
The Maraîchine has longer horns than the Parthenais and the coat is coarser; bulls show long hair on the withers. They can be reddish-brown or grey, with a light-colored muzzleband; bulls have darker forequarters.
According to SNP studies, the Parthenais and Maraîchine show no clear link with other breed groups.
(French) Vendée maraîchin = Vendée Marsh
