Luing
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)
The Luing was developed on the Isle of Luing which belongs to the Inner Hebrides (“inner isles”) — an archipelago off the west coast of Scotland.
The Luing is a beef breed started in 1947 by three Cadzow brothers (Ralph, Denis and Shane) who began creating a base population by crossing Beef Shorthorn and Whitebred Shorthorn bulls with Highland cows, and then proceeded thus:
• Crossbred heifers were backcrossed to a Shorthorn bull (named Cruggleton Alastair).
• Two males of this mating were then inbred during a phase to their half-sisters.
• Crossbreeding continued until the breed was fixed.
• Linebreeding was used in succeeding generations.
In 1965, having proved they could consistently breed true to type, the Luing was officially recognized. Luing cows are used most often in terminal crossbreeding programs and are known for their above average ability to convert forage into meat.
NOTE: During the same period in history, a similar breed known as the Snowlander was being devloped in Canada. This page was last updated on: 2023-05-18
