Lourdais
(transboundary/brand name)
(most common name):
• Lourdaise
(local/other name):
• La race Lourdaise
The Lourdais, a medium-sized triple-purpose breed, began in the valleys to the west of the French Pyrenees.
The Lourdais herdbook was started in 1894. The abandonment of draught by cattle and the rise of specialized breeds led to its decline. In 1982, a conservation scheme was launched and in 2003 the Lourdais was grouped with the Casta for management purposes.
The Lourdais is white to creamy-white, with medium-length lyre horns; both horns and hoofs are yellow.
