The Japanese Poll was developed from 1868–1910 as a cross between (now extinct) Japanese Native cows and Aberdeen-Angus bulls.
From 1975, F₁ females have been crossed with Japanese Black bulls.
The Japanese Poll was officially recognized as a breed in 1944 and can be found mainly in Yamaguchi Prefecture in southeast Honshu (Japan’s largest island).
