The Illyrian is an Iberian type, similar to the Greek Shorthorn, and includes the Albanian and Buša.

Local strains have included:
Skhodra Red (Scutari) - best developed; strong back, deep chest, long body and correct legs; red coat (various shades)
Marolais - less well-developed; triple-purpose
Albanian Dwarf - smallest type, found in the mountains

Brachyceros-type cattle are described as:

• having a long skull with a deep forehead
• having a red, brown or black coat
