The Hungarian Pied began when Swiss cattle were imported to upgrade the Hungarian Grey and other local cattle in the early 19th century. Simmental admixture was the most significant as various local strains developed. These cattle of crossbred origin became known collectively as the ‘Hungarian Pied’. Purebred Simmental herds were also maintained and these were all merged in the late 1940s — and are now known as the Hungarian Simmental.
