The Hariana is the most widespread breed in northern India and originated in the Haryana Plains — which are part of the Indo-Gangetic Plains in Haryana state.
The Hariana was initially selected primarily for work, but today its dairy qualities are being improved.
The Hariana can be described as:
• white or light grey coat
• bulls are darker
• compactly built
• large hump
• bony peak between the horns is common
• fine horns usually no longer than 25 cm
Hariana varieties/strains include:
• Gangatiri
• Hissar
• Shahabadi
