Guaymí
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name):
• Creole
The Guaymí origniates from Spanish cattle introduced into Panama in 1519. These animals proliferated and rapidly spread from Panama to the west, reaching Mexico and Peru and further into South America.
The Guaymí developed in the area that includes the Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous region in the mountainous area of the Chiriquí Province in Panama.
The name Guaymí is dervied from the Ngäbe and Buglé indigenous peoples, who were once collectively known as ‘Guaymí’ (now an outdated name).
Guaymí uses include:
• meat
• milk
• research
• tourist attraction
Guaymí coat colors include:
• brown speckled/pied
• fawn
• cariblanco (grey body with white spot on face and dark circles around eyes)
• black (with light white spots on face and body)
Guaymí coat hairs are very short and sleek which implies the possible presence of the slick hair gene.
Guaymí horns are:
• long (generally)
• slender, strong and upwardly lyre-shaped
• smooth and firm
• color ranging from light to dark with darker tips
The Guaymí, as confirmed by microsatellites, is related to the Guabalá.
