In 1898, the Glanrind was amalgamated with the Donnersberger Rotvieh (Donnersberg) creating the Glan-Donnersberger (Glan-Donnersberg) breed.

Glan-Donnersberger numbers declined rapidly after WWII — cattle with pneumonia were culled and a dramatic decline of farming took place in the Rhineland highlands. Then crossbreeding nearly caused their extinction.

However, in 1985, twenty-five breeders created an association for the preservation of the Glanrind; a population of almost 1,000 has held steady since 2014. The Glanrind is considered to be ‘at risk’ and ‘endangered’ as a breed.
