Girolando
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)
(local/other name):
• Gyrholando (Colombia)
The Girolando is a Holstein (5/8) × Gir (3/8) cross.
A possibly accidental mating of a Gir bull with a number of Friesian cattle in Paraiba valley, in the state of São Paulo in Brazil, occurred sometime in the 1940s or 1950s. These crosses became known as Girolando.
In 1978, a Girolando breed society was founded to stabilize a composite genotype of (5/8) Holstein and (3/8) Dairy Gir. Breed recognition was obtained in 1989.
The Girolando has been exported to other tropical countries (including Benin in 2004). Girolando semen is slated to be exported to India.
