The German Simmental evolved as a dual-purpose breed from the amalgamation of local Red and Red Spotted Highland breeds that were crossed, over centuries, with imported Bernese-Simmental cattle.
The importation of pure Swiss Simmental stock for breed development stopped in 1926 when the German Simmental could be considered an independent breed.
