The German Shorthorn can be found on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein state in Germany.
• 1840s - Shorthorns imported through the port of Tönning on the Eiderstedt peninsula; crossed with German Red Pied in order to breed high quality beef cattle for export to Britain
• 1886 - German Shorthorn breed society formed
• 1918 - dairy merits of German Shorthorn gained momentum
• 1937 - 29,230 milk-recorded German Shorthorn cows
• 1970 - German Shorthorn outcompeted by specialized dairy and beef breeds; dairy population absorbed by German Red Pied
The German Shorthorn is currently considered ‘at risk’. The state of Schleswig-Holstein provides support for purebred calves.
