The Gatacko belongs to the Illyrian Shorthorn cattle group and is a brachyceros type.
The Gatacko is the result of crossbreeding in the early 1900s between the local Neretva and Polim Buša and the Tyrol Grey.
The Gatacko has a grey coat and is slightly larger than the Buša.
Brachyceros-type cattle are described as:
• small
• shorthorned
• having a long skull with a deep forehead
• having a red, brown or black coat
The Gatacko population count in 2003 was a maximum of 66,000 and its risk status as of 2024 is still listed as unknown.
