The Flemish Red was once so diluted as a breed that it fell in numbers so drastic that a conservation program was established in 1977 for the preservation of the original type.
In 1988, two thousand purebred cows were registered and 1,975 first inseminations with semen from 24 purebred Flemish bulls were carried out.
Breeding Flemish Red animals and semen have been exported to:

• Canada
• China
