Dengchuan
邓川牛
(most common name)
The Dengchuan is small, with thin legs — but this does not stop them from being excellent work animals, especially for draught due to their deep chests and sloping rumps. The bulls have high humps; cows are humpless.
The Dengchuan originated in Eryuan County and Dengchuan Prefecture (Yunnan province).
According to Mason (Encyclopedia 2016), in 2001 the Dengchuan was reported to be endangered through introgression or replacement and in 1981 there was population of 40,000.
According to Mason (Dictionary 2002, 2020) the Dengchuan is extinct.
But, according to DAD-IS, China does not list it as extinct and reports a population maximum of 554 in 2006.
So, the Dengchuan may or may not be extinct as of 2021.
