The Butana is a Large East African Zebu belonging to a group known as Red Desert cattle (they are red and they live in the desert).

The Butana originated in the Butana plain, which is located east of the Blue Nile in the Kassala and Gedaref states in eastern Sudan. These cattle then spread to Gizera in central Sudan and also along the Nile River in the northern region.

The Butana, raised as a dual-purpose breed, are known for their good milk production.
