Blue Albion
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Blue English
• Derbyshire Blue
The Blue Albion was originally the result of crossing Welsh Black cows with local white Shorthorn bulls (with some Dutch Friesian DNA added later down the line).
Technically, the Blue Albion became extinct in the late 1960s. Today’s Blue Albion is a re-creation of the breed and is, thus, a new breed. It should have a new name.
All breeders of re-created breeds that are using the same name as the extinct breed are, in general, causing arguments and confusion about this type of naming practice in the world of domestic livestock.
For the history of Shorthorns, see Beef Shorthorn.
