The Blacksided Trondheim and Nordland began development during the 1880s and 1890s and is based on local breeds from the middle and northern part of Norway. Breeds included in the initial herdbook established in 1943 were:
• Blacksided Trondheim
• Nordland (Nordlandsfe)
• Røros

The Blacksided Trondheim and Nordland is a somewhat small breed. Since 1950, admixture of 10–20% has come from Swedish Mountain imports.
