LADAT (lah-DAHT) - slang for: like that
laminate - to overlay with a protective material; in surfboard construction, the laminate consists of fiberglass and a resin
LANAI (lah-NAH-ee) - house deck, open porch, balcony, veranda
landlord - a great white shark
landshark - a guy who doesn't surf, but says he does
LANI (LAH-nee) - heaven, heavenly, spiritual
leash (also cord) - a urethane cord used to attach the surfboard to an ankle strap on a surfer
leash (also kook cord, leg rope, surf leash) - a cord with one end attached to the surfboard and the other end attached to an ankle strap which is worn by the surfer; used in an effort to not lose the surfboard after falling off it and also utilized as a lifeline back to the surface since the board will float better than the surfer; usually the same length as the surfboard; high quality ones are made of polyurethane
leeward -
1) not facing the wind; on the side not facing the wind
2) the side sheltered from the wind; in the direction of the side sheltered from the wind
3) downwind

left -
1) a wave breaking to the left from the vantage point of a surfer riding in
2) a wave breaking towards the right from the vantage point of the shore
3) phrase shouted by a person intending to go left on a wave, thereby leaving the right for someone else (see also right and coming down) : Left!

line - the horizontal length of the wave as it breaks relatively parallel to the shore
lineup (also line up, line-up) -
1) the place just beyond the impact zone where you wait to catch waves
2) the place where the surfers are sitting
3) the place where the waves are breaking
4) a position surfers paddle to offshore that is determined by using two different markers on the beach or water (e.g. a lighthouse and a buoy) to triangulate their position in relationship to the waves they hope to ride; without determining position, i.e. the lineup, chasing large waves can result in being lost at sea
lines - an unbroken series of waves coming into shore
lip -
1) the part of a wave that pitches out
2) the top of a breaking swell
3) the curling edge at the top of a wave
4) the top edge of the face of a wave just before it breaks
lip bash (also off the lip, off-the-lip, hitting the lip) - to ride up the wave, hit the breaking lip with your board, and then quickly turn back into the wave
liquid seam (also fluid seam, liquid tape) - a fluid rubber used on seams to create a durable, waterproof barrier; can be applied outside, inside, or on both sides of the wetsuit; can be stitched over or not, can be taped over or not; known to decrease flexibility; good for cold water

locked in - to be firmly set in the curling portion of the wave with water holding down the tail of the board.
log -
1) a longboard, 9' or longer
2) a surfboard made of wood
log (also cruizer and longboard) -
1) a surfboard usually 8' to 10' long with a rounded nose; usually used for hanging fives or hanging tens, drop-knee turns, cross-stepping and tandem surfing
2) any board 3' longer than your height with a wide, rounded nose

LOKAHI (loh-KAH-hee) - agreement, unison, harmony
LOLO (LOH-loh) -
1) dumb, stupid, idiotic, feeble-minded, crazy

LUA (LUU-ah) - bathroom, toilet, outhouse
lull -
1) a momentary gap or break in wave activity
2) an interval of time where the waves are breaking much smaller than before
LUNA (LUU-nah) - a boss, foreman, leader, supervisor, officer of any sort
