Santa Gertrudis

Go to My Daily Cow® for little tidbits of bovine information.
The audio is from an after school session with students from
Santa Rita Elementary in Los Altos, CA.

The Santa Gertrudis on-line script matches what the students actually performed. So what you hear and what you read will match. (This is a great way to learn English and to learn how to read.)

ANNOUNCER

A cow breed started in Texas? Today we are talking to the Santa Gertrudis.

SFX: Moooo

REPORTER

Tell me again what year it was.

MONKEY

Oh, somewhere around 1910.

REPORTER

And it was at the King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas?

MONKEY

Yep. One of the gentlemen there became interested in Brahman cattle. Figured a jolt of Brahman could maybe make their range cattle a might better.

REPORTER

So, they mated a half blood Shorthorn-Brahman with some purebred Shorthorn females.

MONKEY

Yep. That they did. After about eight years, their descendants were such good-lookin’ cattle that the King Ranch took a go at cross-breeding Shorthorns and Brahmans.

REPORTER

Were the Brahmans purebred?

MONKEY

Nope. The young bulls they used were three-fourths and seven-eighths Brahman.

REPORTER

So, what’s that? Everything but one hind leg and a hip?

MONKEY

Ha-ha.

REPORTER

Seriously, how do they determine a number like that?

MONKEY

I have no idea. As far as I’m concerned, it’s like tryin’ to count cactus needles.

REPORTER

And your name -

MONKEY

What about my name?

REPORTER

Monkey Business. What kind of a name is that for a cow?

MONKEY

All present day Santa Gertrudis cattle can be traced back to a foundation sire named Monkey.

REPORTER

Monkey?

MONKEY

Monkey.

REPORTER

Monkey.

MONKEY

It gets hot in Texas.

REPORTER

It must.
