Watusi -cow- Burundi/Rwanda/Tanzania

Watusi
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)

local/other name (English):
• Burundi sanga
• Rwanda sanga

The Watusi are bred by the Tutsi people (the largest ethnic group of the African Great lakes region).

The Watusi have, on average, the longest horns of the Ankole cattle group.

Ankole cattle are found in East Africa in an area extending from Lake Albert (formerly Lake Mobutu) to Lake Tanganyika. (Both lakes belong to a series of lakes known as the African Great Lakes.)

Ankole cattle are described as having:
• very long horns
• medium-long heads
• short necks with large dewlaps
• narrow chests

The Watusi is also the breed used as the basis of the American Ankole-Watusi.
