Hazake 哈萨克牛 -cow- China

Hazake
哈萨克牛
(most common name)

(local/other name):
• Kazak

The Hazake is a Turano-Mongolian breed.

The Hazake is found in the Tian Shan Mountains and upland plains of northwest Xinjiang and is believed to have been indigenous since the 18th century.

Microsatellite studies suggest the Hazake is closely related to the Mongolian. mtDNA shows female lineages to be taurine; Y chromosomes show some zebu introgression.

Turano-Mongolian, in reference to cattle, refers to a distinctive skull formation that includes:
• a wedge-shaped skull
• a depression on the frontal bone
• a narrow crown
• horns growing straight-up

In 2006, China listed a Hazake population of 600,000. No further population updates have been reported in DAD-IS.
