The Caqueteño is a medium-sized breed with a coat color that varies between light bay and cherry red; the hair is short and fine.

Although most of the females (and to a lesser extent the males) present an umbilical fold which indicates zebu admixture, no study has found any degree of genetic introgression of this type.

The Caqueteño is perhaps the most unknown of the Colombian Criollo breeds and there is fear of its extinction.
