The Pezzata rossa italiana (aka Pezzata rossa friulana; Italian Red Pied and Friuli-Simmental and Improved Friuli and Italian Simmental and Red Pied Friuli and Simmental Friulana in English) is a locally derived breed - 'derived' meaning that local cattle were improved in stages.
In this case, it was the crossing of the local Friuli cows with imported Swiss Simmental bulls.
