The grid on the left of the Timeline is the Patch Panel and it allows you to build up to 99 tracks each of audio and video.

To add a track:

Sequence - Insert Tracks

The Patch Panel determines which track is being edited.
(You can also drag the connections with your cursor if the Keyboard Shortcuts below aren't making you happy.)

To connect a Patch (on tracks 1 through 9):

Video Patch: F6 + track # (F6 plus track number)
Audio Patch A1: F7 + track # (F7 plus track number)
Audio Patch A2: F8 + track # (F8 plus track number)

If a Patch is disconnected, your edit should not affect it.

To disconnect a Patch (on tracks 1 through 9):

Video Patch disconnect: ⇧F6 + track # (Shift-F6 plus track number)
Audio Patch A1 disconnect: ⇧F7 + track # (Shift-F7 plus track number)
Audio Patch A2 disconnect: ⇧F8 + track #
(Shift-F8 plus track number)
